This is from the original isoceles.tv website. If copying this biography infringes on anyone's rights, let me know and I will promptly take it down. I'm just worried that if no one saves it, it will be lost forever.

The Story So Far:

In 1995, twin brothers, and pioneering Saskatchewan hip hop staples, Sasafras and Shrmp leave their homes on the prairies, and arrive at Beat Factory Studios (Toronto) to record their first project, an E.P. under the name MirrorImage, with production handled by DJ Luv (PKA: L.A. Luv). With skills beyond their years, the E.P. manages to cause a buzz amongst the "in-the-know" underground hip hop community, despite it never being officially released! Soon after, the twins pack their bags and switch to the "left coast", to spend some time exploring the musical underworlds of Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C.

While in Vancouver, they discover a compilation tape (Q-Continuum) which features a track ("The Only One") from an MC known as Boya D. Boya, a long-time veteran of the Vancouver hip hop scene, had been laying low for several years, seeking for "like-minded" artists to collaborate with. In 1995, he meets the twins (now operating as "Hokus Pokus") at a freestyle barbecue, and together they discuss their shared visions of hip hop.

In 1996, Sasafras, Shrmp and Boya meet again, and collaborate on a recording of instrumentals. Then, in the summer of 1997, with the twins back in Vancouver once again, "Isosceles" is officially formed, and the first E.P (self-titled) is recorded and released to the underground. Finally, in April 1998, Boya leaves his humble abode in Vancouver, and moves to Saskatoon, where in October of 1998, the first full-length Isosceles release, "Face the Music" is completed and released.

Recorded entirely on in-expensive home recording gear, the CD still manages to reach hip hop fans around the world, generating a significant buzz and establishing Isosceles as an innovative new star on the horizon. Their intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics, original, jazz based beats and "ill" turntablism fuse together and relate to the listener first hand, forming a fresh approach to rap music which is interactively intelligent, cool, conscious and fun.

The album quickly begins to earn Isosceles recognition and incredible opportunites, and they are soon warming stages for acts such as Xzibit, Defari, the Pharcyde, Del the funkee homosapien, Kardinal Offishall, Herbaliser, Dalai Lamas, Mystik Journeymen, Eligh, and others.... as well as headlining shows in all the major Western Canadian cities, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.

Isosceles bio from HipHop.ca

This bio was originally on the hiphop.ca website, which has been down for years. I found this in a google search on rhymestate.com. The Isosceles, a Canadian hip hop trio, is made up of twin brothers Shrmpy and Sasafras, as well as the telepathic triplet known as Boya D. The crew began its odyssey after Shrmpy and Sasafras recorded an EP with the Dream Warriors in May of 1995, under the name Mirror Image. This EP, a self-titled release, was engineered and recorded at the Beat Factory Studio (in downtown Toronto). It was sent to several major record labels, at their request, to be reviewed for discussion of record contracts. The labels were hesitant to sign them because they wanted to hear more material, but Pallas Records purchased the rights to Pet Peaves, a track produced by DJ Luv, which was featured on a Japanese compilation. Later that year, they flew home to Saskatoon, where they heard an underground tape of independent Vancouver hip hop artists. One of those artists was a solo musician who went by the name of Boya D. After hearing this tape, Shrmpy and Sasafras were destined to discover Boya's whereabouts in the greater Vancouver area; a week later they left Saskatoon and headed out west.

In the summer of 1997, the newly founded Isosceles crew recorded a self-titled EP which was circulated all across Canada, giving them a buzz on radio stations, in and around the cities where they've performed. Unfortunately, two years went by before they decided to really make things happen because of the long distance between Vancouver and Saskatoon. In early April of '98, Boya left his humble abode in Vancouver and relocated to the prairies where their latest release, Face the Music was recorded. Their original beats, thought-provoking lyrics, and ill turntablism fuse and combine to relate with the listener first-hand, forming a fresh approach to rap music which is interactively intelligent, cool and conscious. Face the Music has and continues to earn them remarkable underground recognition in Canada, Australia, the U.S. and beyond. The Isosceles have toured western Canada and California, and have broken the ice as the opening act for world-renown hip hop artists such as Xzibit, Defari, Del The Funkee Homosapien & Casual, The Herbaliser (UK), and various unsigned artists from all over the atlas. In the past two years they have colloborated with several artists including DJ Vin Roc, Orko The Sykotik Alien, Moka Only, and others. Be sure to purchase the Rulez of Thumb EP, recorded at the Furnace and released on Thick'n'Thin Records during the summer solstice of '99. The EP features the Isosceles and Orko the Sykotik Alien representing the Global Phlowtations crew from San Diego, California

The Isosceles belong to a large family of western Canada's finest experimental hip hop musicians, known as the Conscious Pilots. This collective crew is making noise and will release a compilation sometime in the near future, featuring tracks from various members of the Conscious Pilots foundation.

Isosceles

One of my all time favourite hip hop groups is a small trio out of Saskatchewan called Isosceles. Their timeless album 'Face the Music', released in 1998 under their independent label Thick 'N Thin, still gets played a couple times a month in my iTunes. To me, it embraces west coast living and has the most down-to-earth, chill feeling I've ever encountered in hip hop. I learned a lot from their songs.

But there's one thing I've always been frustrated with: I could never buy their album. By the time I realized that music wasn't just for taking, and that it's good to give back to artists, they had vacated their North Vancouver recording studio in lieu of opportunities in Japan. Their original webpage (isoceles.tv) went stagnate and for a period of time they seemed to have disappeared from the internet. Luckily, I found a couple of bio snippets and I've added my own tracklistings:

I would love to get my hands on an original copy of their CD, and if anyone with a copy finds this entry, please let me know.

Also, while researching this article I found that they have a rejuvenated myspace account. Listen to 'Sign Language' on their myspace... real hip hop! I also found the host for their original website, which is here: http://members.shaw.ca/isosceles/ Finally, their label has a new myspace account at: http://www.myspace.com/thicknthinrecordings

Maybe there is hope they'll create some new music!

I really like this song. We were having a round of drinks at Section3 and the DJ mixed this into his set... so cool!

“For example, in the chorus of Mos Def's "Mathematics," Premier cuts the following in quick succession:

  • "The Mighty Mos Def" (from Mos Def's "Body Rock"),
  • "It's simple mathematics" (from Fat Joe's "John Blaze"),
  • "Check it out" (Lady of Rage from Snoop Dogg's "For All My Niggaz & Bitches"),
  • "I revolve around science" (from Ghostface Killah's verse on Raekwon's "Criminology"),
  • "What are we talking about here" (from the movie "Ghostbusters"),
  • "Do your math" (from Erykah Badu's "On & On"), and
  • "One, two, three, four" (from James Brown's "Funky Drummer")
On certain artists' work the vocal samples will all be vocal samples of the artist from the artist's past work; "Nas Is Like" and Nas' "2nd Childhood" are two well-known examples of this.”

Interesting to see where those cuts comes from... one of Mos Def's best.
